Fu Shing Elementary School



Our school was determined to promote green campus, environmental education, localization, and school disaster prevention. Therefore, we proposed a sustainable campus project and put it into stages, so as to achieve the aims of the project: Health, Lohas, and Aesthetics. At the first stage, we bases our project on sustainability and closely examined the environment of our campus. Then, we carefully structured the project according to the examination result, and managed to apply more funds to improve the safety and learning environment on our campus. After examination, we found there are certain places on the campus that pose potential danger and threaten studentsˇ¦ safety. For example, the uneven surfaces of our pebble pavement in the western part of the garden, sharp edges of our concrete benches and flower stands. Hence, we planned to change the gardenˇ¦s pavement into a soft and green one. We also realized suitable plants to green our campus. They could increase the schoolˇ¦s bio-diversity and recycle rainwater for irrigation. The climbing plants could insulate the buildings from strong sunlight and lower the indoor temperature. Besides, during the eco courses teachers lead the students to improve the permeability of our pavement. Through these green activities students were encouraged to take part in the sustainable campus project. They could read and play under the trees, and learn to respect life by relieving our trees from concrete pavement. In 2013 we entered the second stage of our project. We paid more attention to energy saving, natural energy boosting, energy recycling, refuse classification, and the reduction of waste discharges and kitchen garbage. As for energy saving, we planned to monitor our energy consumption by installing a monitoring system. We also reduced our water and electricity consumption and improved our insulation. For better ventilation in our classrooms and toilets, we used buoyancy-driven ventilation or thermal natural ventilation. Daylight would also be used to boost our lighting in the offices, toilets, and classrooms. Our energy recycling is primarily dependent on rainwater recycling. Because our old rainwater recycling system did not cover the roofs of the auditorium and every building, we decided to enhance this part and combined it with our mineral water collection. We also designed certain courses for our students to have better understanding of the importance of energy recycling.
