Fu Sing Primary School

Our schoolˇ¦s geography is special because we are located at where city (Zhonghe District, New Taipei City) and the mountains (Niupu Mountain) meet. In other words, we are the intermediary point between nature and the world of man. Our campus is rich in natural and environmental resources. These resources offer great potential for our school to incorporate green learning and green education into our curriculum. As we are still located within the city, we have a considerable student body in size (1866 students) spread over 65 classes. This means that the fruits of our environmental education can have a bigger impact and benefit more people. I. Rainwater Collecting and Reusing System: Using height difference to store and use rainwater: we used the height difference of the platforms located on the rooftops of the gym and another building to collect rainwater. The rainwater collected from the gym rooftop is used for flushing, and the water collected from another building is used for plant watering. When the rainwater storage tank on the gym rooftop is full, the excess water flows into the tank on the lower classroom building via a pipe. When the lower tank is full, the excess water flows into a tank located in the foundation of the building. That water will later be pumped back to refill the tank of the building. When the tank becomes full, the excess water will then flow into the drainage culvert. This process reduces the amount of collected rainwater wasted. Multiple Ways to Collect and Reuse Water 1. Wastewater flowing from sinks is collected to water lawns and campus vegetation. 2. The pebbles in our Senior Citizens Farm can increase the groundˇ¦s ability to retain water. 3. We incorporated rainwater drainage tunnels into campus landscaping. The rainwater is allowed to permeate the soil. As a result, plants have more time to absorb rainwater before it goes in the drainage culvert. We also used traditional, natural, and biodegradable aqueducts such as bamboo pipes. II. Green learningˇVcampus and teaching facilities The Sustainable Campus Project should not only improve physical campus space, but also plant seeds of environmental education in the students. Environmental education can really impact the students through using a combination of curriculum, campus space, and campus facilities. We can really deliver the value of sustainability to our students in this manner. The project uses informational Q&A cards in our demonstration teaching area to educate students on topics such as watering plants with recycled water, using height difference and gravity to transport water, communicating tubes principles, community volunteerˇ¦s participation in campus greening, in-season foods, and food miles. This not only allows the teachers and students to maximize the efficiency of learning on their own, but also enhances the campus experience of the parents of students and members of our community.
