National Taichung University of Science and Technology (NTCUST)

The financial aid provided for construction was approved in February 2015. Phase 1 consisted of two parts focusing on inspection and planning of campus sustainability in the Sanmin Campus. In campus energy conservation and disaster prevention, NTCUST adhered to the Four Savings Project by the Executive Yuan, and underwent several renovations that included the hot water systems in the student dormitories, lighting systems, air conditioners, and power monitoring systems. From 2012 to 2014, NTCUST was recognized as a model school for efficient energy consumption by government units such as the Ministry of Education, the Bureau of Energy at the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the Taichung City Government. Since 2009, the major thoroughfares on the Sanmin Campus have been upgraded with water permeable pavement, and today most of the campus roads feature this improved pavement. NTCUST has announced that it will continue to include campus environmental improvement in its budget. The 2015 Sustainable Campus Project focused on implementing shading facilities on the fifth floor. During this process, the Safety, Health, and Environment Center assumed responsibility for detailed planning, the Construction and Maintenance Division of the Office of General Affairs assumed responsibility for engineering procurement, and the General Education Center and the Department of Interior Design assumed responsibility for the promotion of environmental education. Specifically, the Department of Interior Design created several new courses, such as the Introduction of Energy-Saving Environment Design and the Physical Environment of Buildings, where concepts including outdoor shading design and solar angle analysis were taught. Conversely, the General Education Center offered environmental courses, such as the Introduction of Higher Education, and Human and Environment. By participating in the construction process of the external shading infrastructure, students also experienced the relationship among shading plates, sunlight, indoor temperature, and indoor environmental changes. Furthermore, NTCUST also self-funded horizontal black shading nets to complement the shading blinds on the fifth floor of the Changming Building. These two shading installations have alleviated problems with direct insolation and high temperature in the west end of the fifth floor during summers. By participating in the 2015 Sustainable Campus Project, NTCUST revisited opportunities to plan campus sustainability. Establishing the campus landscape is a continual process, and comprehensive and accurate planning set the foundation for future development. In addition, NTCUST was able to reflect on whether the current administrative objectives and campus sustainability promotion matched. The universityˇ¦s policy in environmental safety and health aims to create an excellent sustainable campus, and the implementation process and experiences of the Sustainable Campus Project serve as key references for the future development of campus sustainability.
