Campus Biotope Creation Based on Potential Vegetation !

Sustainable University Campus Project Sponsored by the Ministry of Education

Project Title: Tunghai University Campus Biotope Creation Based on Potential Vegetation

ABSTRACT

Ecological restoration of the biodiversity in a sustainable campus stresses the importance of the biotope creation.

The plants constitute the primary producers of the ecological pyramid. Rich biomass of the plants forms the steady foundation for the food chain and thus enables the stability of the ecosystem. They also provide habitats for decomposers such as earthworms, ants, bacteria, fungi, and primary consumers such as beetles, butterflies, dragonflies, mantises, frogs, etc.

This project has performed an experiment for the biotope creation by means of potential vegetation reconstruction. Multiple-layer planting technique using the ground covers as the basic planting unit was applied to enhance the biomass of the primary producer (the plant growth), so as to provide the food source for the decomposers and the consumers within the ecological pyramid. The ground covers help the improvement of the niche and the microenvironment. Meanwhile, they also benefit the topsoil protection as well as beautification of the landscape.

Construction of the present project has included the installation of an irrigation system, a rainfall collection pond and the garden walk trails. It is intended to exemplify this project as a demonstration of campus biotope creation.
