Yong-An Elementary School

We invited An-Shi (安?) and Houbi (後壁) elementary schools and Houbi Junior High School (後壁國中) to work on the joint sustainable campus project, and then we four formed an East Rice Ally to deal with the water issues around us. This project was primarily based on rainwater recycling: from harvesting to vaporization, dissipation and re-distribution. Our ally acted as a council center for local communities to consult about ecological issues.
Yong-An is close to 91 county highway and is surrounded by delicate pond ecosystems, such as Linchu Pond (林初埤), Jiangjyun Pond (將軍埤) and Yong-An Reservoir (永安水庫), aka Little South Sea (小南海). The rich landscapes on the campus nearly turn our school into a forest school. In 2007 and 2008, we tried energy recycling in many aspects and even cooperated with the Dept. of Electrical Technique of Hou-Pi Senior High School in our energy courses, which, we hoped, could set as a model for local energy education.
Aims of Our Project:
(1) acting as a local
(2) improving our environment with rainwater harvesting, insulation, and energy recycling
(3) wiser use of derelict sites; interior improvement; and energy education system
Double roof (interior improvement and rainwater recycling): the east wing of the teaching building has an eastern exposure and therefore has caused unbearable heat in the classrooms. With the gutter and double roof, we collect rainwater and direct it to a reservoir. In doing so, we not only cut the power consumption but also solve the leaking problem in the IT room.
Showered roof (interior improvement and natural / healthy materials): we put the rainwater harvesting tanks outside the library, collect rainwater from the east wing guttering system, and direct it to the roof of Rain-Watching Reading Room. The showered roof effectively lowers the temperature of the reading room.
Rain-Watching Reading Room (natural / healthy materials): derelict sites by the library are reused as a water recycling workshop and also a study corner of the library. This rearrangement of untended places takes only pieces of our locally manufactured Tatami (straw mats) and some natural / healthy materials.
In the future, Yong-An will be committed to integrating our resources into local communities acting as a platform to share all these experiences in eco education and sustainable development.
