Jinsyue Elementary School

!

1.Background
Our school is located in central Tainan and covers 4.2 hectare land with 780 students and staff approximately. After years of greening, there are about 800 trees (in 37 categories) on the campus, such as manila tamarind (a÷At?e), banyan tree (o_?e), Taiwan ebony (?o?U), chinaberry (-W-d) and other native species. In order to follow the 9-Year Compulsory Education policy, we integrate life education and eco education into our courses, aiming to build up sustainability on the campus.

2. Problems
The poor permeability of the asphalt concrete (AC) pavement on the east side of East Building causes uneven surfaces and bad soil water retention. While the East Building is east/west facing, the South Building faces south and suffers from direct sunlight from the south in the summer. So our students have to live with high temperatures and stuffy air during class. Besides, the bad ventilation in the audio-visual rooms makes students turn on air conditioning, which pushes up our energy consumption and our electricity bills.

3. Solutions
We removed the AC pavement and lay out some carpet grass there. Irrigation was mostly dependent on underground water. Ventilators, driven by temperature difference, were installed on the roof to help air circulation and to improve the air quality. We directed cold outdoor air from the stairways into the pipes under the ground of audio-visual rooms. Then the air came out from the bottom of the seats in the rooms. The fresh air from stairways and the new ventilators were expected to improve the air quality of our audio-visual rooms. Finally, we installed some adjustable horizontal metal canopies to insulate strong sunlight and to lower the temperature. With these new canopies, now we can open our windows for more fresh air.

4. Results
After all these interior improvements, students can enjoy a better study environment. We also monitored and made a record of indoor temperature changes, and less use of air conditioning. These energy saving actions serve as a good example for our students to understand the importance of sustainable development.

5. Conclusion
Sustainable development is a long way to go. Our project can be expected as a good start to lead students to approach these green issues around us. And we believe there is still more we can do in our future eco education.
