Our school has implemented the Sustainable Campus Project since 2010. To conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions, we have examined infrastructure and operations to identify those in need of improvement. We will convey the essence of sustainable development using promotion campaigns and our curricula.
Our utility bills have been as high as NT$2m every year. First, we need to reduce the bills. To solve this problem, we have made a comprehensive plan, including the following items:
1. Improve microclimate on campus: we wish to reduce temperatures and humidity by growing more plants. In 2011, we grew more than 40 trees. We will continue to grow more potted plants.
2. Increase ventilation in classrooms: if possible, windows are kept open. By doing so, we can increase indoor ventilation. Additionally, teachers can also teach students about convection. We have also installed vent holes in classrooms, where ventilation used to be especially poor. This was a project under the Sustainable Campus Project. From 2014 to 2017, we will make rooftops water-proof and heat-insulating and build pitched roofs.
3. Harvest rainwater: pitched roofs can be used to collect rainwater, which can be used for watering plants on every floor. This project was subsidized by the Sustainable Campus Project in 2011. The roofs are still in use now.
4. Installing energy monitoring system and avoid wasting energy: the classrooms are air-conditioned. Energy consumption always increases significantly in summer. To avoid wasting energy, we have passed relevant rules to manage energy consumption. To precisely monitor energy consumption, we applied to install energy monitoring system, which was approved by the MOE in 2013. The system is expected to significantly reduce energy consumption this summer after the installation in 2014. We have reduced the agreed energy consumption by 55kW, which is expected to result in a NT$120,000 decrease in the energy bill.
After participating in the conference on the Sustainable Campus Project, we have realized the importance of energy conservation in our daily life and how to apply physical principles to increase ventilation, reduce temperatures, humidity, and water consumption. During his term, the principal wishes to build an energy-conserving and low-carbon campus and that students can learn in school to save energy and reduce carbon emissions.
