Shun-An Junior High School

!

Located in the Dongshan River area of the Lanyang Plain, Shun-An Junior High School enjoys a rich amount of rainfall brought by the year-long north-east monsoon. It is a school filled with rural color, with its curriculum featuring water and ecology.

The school has focused on agricultural development; however, a stable source of water supply was never in place. The school could only rely on tap water to irrigate the farmland, which is at a distance. This not only increased the school!|s utility cost, but also wasted a lot of water. As a result, the idea of rainwater recycling emerged.

The water catchment area for this project is the rooftop of the aisle of the activity center. It can hold as much as 8 tons of water, and at the same time, solve the prolonged leakage problem. With an area of 80 square meters, multiplied by Yilan!|s annual rainfall, it is estimated to recycle around 290 tons of water a year. This amount can fully satisfy irrigation needs, even with a surplus to clean the activity center. From a sustainable environmental education perspective, this project is a good example of using natural resources and existing materials to solve problems. In addition, to mitigate the impact of global warming, the concept of carbon footprint has become a popular issue. ;Pursuing a low-carbon lifestyle has become a common goal.

First, the school started with energy conservation. In the past, the circuit of lights in classrooms did not match actual demands. For sufficient illumination, all 5 circuits had to be turned on. After the implementation of the Sustainable School Project, only 3 have to be turned on when there is sufficient sun light. This change not only conserves energy but also saves money. Furthermore, the school also installed a digital water meter. Everyone can see real-time reading online. An abnormal high can be detected and corrected immediately, rather than passively receiving a notification. In teaching, students can get a better sense of how much water they use every day so that they will be more aware of energy conservation.

The aim of the Sustainable School Project is to spread the seeds of environmental education in the heart of our children by providing hands!Von experiences, instead of unilateral lecturing. Industrial revolution has caused many global environmental problems. Global warming, reduction of biodiversity, insufficient water resources, and desertification are all threatening human being!|s survival. Only through education can we stop this trend and achieve a sustainable future.
