Devastated by Typhoon Morakot, we have been through years of reconstruction. One of our focuses of the reconstruction was on water supply.
Although we managed to recover the water supply in the school by using tap water from the community, we still suffered from sudden water outage from time to time during the dry season because Typhoon Moraket caused the instability of water supply in the local area. Consequently, the school was unable to provide water for drinking, cleaning, and cooking lunch and dinner.
In the face of water shortage, the school has established a rainwater harvesting system in hopes of retaining rainwater in the rainy season to solve the water shortage issue in the dry season.
Listed below is how the system works:
(1) Rainwater is directed by using the tilted roof of the faculty dormitory;
(2) The water is then directed to the rainwater captured area, which is installed with a bathometer;
(3) If the water supply is insufficient, the water pump will be activated to draw the harvested rainwater to the water tank on the school building;
(4) The harvested rainwater will go through a sand filter before it enters the water supply system;
(5) The filtered rainwater will be used for cleaning, flushing, and irrigating;
(6) The water meter helps the school keep track of the amount of rainwater used.
