Hsin-Ying Elementary School
!
Located in the Nanshi Community, Hsin-Ying Elementary School spans 1.67 hectares. There are currently 23 faculty members and 131 students in six grades plus one kindergarten. The campus lies in the beautiful countryside, embracing the Houlong River. It has rich resources of both plants and animals, making it one of the best places to learn about bio-diversity. In addition, because most students come from faming families, organic farms are planned on campus to connect with students¡¦ life experience. This can also integrate school education with family education, thus developing the feature of the school and forging a consensus. The animal habitat, compost area, and ecological pool have rendered the school a rural paradise in the countryside.
The school district covers mostly the Nanshi Community. In 2011, backed by the Mioli County Government, the school worked with National United University to carry out the Low-Carbon Community Project, capitalizing on local features to promote environmental protection and greening. Stemming from the existing bike lane, which boasts stunning natural and cultural wonders along the way, ecological engineering methods were used to regulate nearby rivers. The old train station was renovated to improve the public transportation system. An ecology trail was also constructed to link up with the bike lane, completing the ecological route. The livable area was selected as one of the six demonstration sites of the Low-Carbon Community Project in Miaoli.
Responsible, Grateful, Resilient, and Flexible are the school¡¦s vision. With this vision, a sustainable campus that is eco-friendly, energy-efficient, and human-centered can be established. By integrating natural and cultural resources, the school successfully constructed a zero-carbon classroom, funded by the Innolux Education Foundation in 2011. The classroom is a great example to promote energy education. It is powered by solar energy and equipped with smart meters and digital monitoring system. Students can see electricity usage at first hand, understand the importance of energy conservation, and further realize the principle of safe clean energy management.
Our school has carried out the Sustainable Campus Project by integrating natural and cultural resources in the community, featuring ¡¥low-carbon school¡¦, ¡¥community classroom¡¦, and ¡¥Hsin-Ying¡¦s pride¡¦ as its curriculum focuses. The four main themes are mitigating global warming, food security, environmental and community awareness, and caring for the land. The important concepts of environmental education are fused into the general curriculum. Students can then learn about these by using the zero-carbon classroom and doing organic farming.
