Nan-Ai Elementary School


    In 2013, we completed the ecological construction project at Jhong-Ai Building, where we installed green roofs and walls, thanks to the city government!|s subsidies. The plants on the roofs, including herbs and plants which lure butterflies, were grown by our students. In addition, we installed two solar panels on the rooftop, and the electricity generated by the panels was used to power the water pumps, which circulates water for the plants on the green walls. We also used recycled PET bottles to induce capillarity for planting. We put a rearing box for aquatic animals and plants on the rooftop. This idea is to combine water resources, fish, and plants to build a comprehensive ecological stepping stone in the city.

    In 2014, we applied for the Sustainable Campus Project of the Ministry of Education. With this project, we hope to use recycled rainwater to water the plants on the green roofs and understand the differences in room temperature between different roofs with an energy-saving monitoring system. In addition, we installed a sun-shading air baffler to prevent direct exposure to sunlight from the west in classrooms. The details of our improvement plans are as follows.

Rainwater Recycling and Reuse
    In the project we applied for this time, gravity water supply was adopted, while plants could also absorb water directly. We reduced the reliance on the water pump using solar power. The facilities storing rainwater were placed on elevated place in order to supply water by gravity. The rainwater recycling system is based on the multiple-use principle. The use of recycled rainwater is based on the evaluation of collection volume of the reservoir and the demand of the green roofs. The recycled rainwater is not only used for our green roofs; the overflow will be used to water plants on the surface and directed to the leaf compost area so that the recycled rainwater can be used in the most effective way.

Energy-Saving Design and Monitoring System
    We plan to design teaching plans based on the cooling effect of different roofs. We hope to guide children to observe and record the differences in cooling effect.

    We also plan to integrate courses from different disciplines such as science and technology, social science, life education, and other comprehensive courses. By doing so, we hope to bring relevant issues into our curriculum, including green roofs, rainwater recycling, thermal insulation, cooling effect, global warming, among others.

Indoor Improvement
    To prevent direct exposure to sunlight from the west in Jhong-Ai Building, we plan to install sun shades at the back of Jhong-Ai Building and plant some vines, as was kindly suggested by the commissioners. These vines include yam leaves and plants from the ivy family, which will climb over the sun shades and whose vines will create a landscape, contributing to ventilation and cooling effect.

    The vines on the sun shades also absorb water directly from their roots so that irrigation water will not splash against the sun shades.
