Hsin-feng Junior High School

!

I.Status Quo and Problems This case involves the classroom building of Hsin-feng Junior High School, located at No.36, Chengde St., Xinfeng Township, Hsinchu County 304, Taiwan (R.O.C.). The four-story building has a rectangle-shaped plane, facing south-southeast. The east-west facing classrooms are exposed to sunlight for a long time during the daytime. However, there are no large trees in the surroundings to shade the building, so the sunlight and heat becomes unbearable in the afternoon. Although weather cloth has been installed on the original windows, but it is not very effective in shading. As a result, teaching quality suffered.

II. Improvement Strategy Given that the building is not directly south-facing and that there are no large eaves projecting beyond the side of a building to offer shade, horizontal external shading devices were installed on the second to fourth floor on the south-southeast side to block the sunlight. The sun shade is coated with metal powder, and a stripe-shaped structure is used to shade the building while allowing sunlight to pass through at the same time.

III. Curriculum Redesign Reports and pictures of global warming are presented, and concrete methods to prevent global warming and contribute to environmental protection are discussed.

IV. Promotion of Sustainable Education We explain and promote the concept of sustainable campus and the purpose of campus revamping to students and parents in assemblies. Resources are shared among the school, construction projects, and the community to transform the campus into a public space featuring ecological education and sustainable development.

    V. Open to the Community The campus is open to the public for leisure activities and education. We hope that campus buildings can be re-shaped into the ones where humanity and nature blend together.
