Ciao Sin Elementary School

!

From the Kyoto Protocol in 1997 to the Copenhagen Summit in 2009, we have seen heated discussions around sustainable development and related practices. This year happens to be the 12th anniversary of the launch of the Sustainable Campus Project by the Ministry of Education. Twelve years have passed since sustainable campus was first promoted, so what we should think about is not only the planning and application of the sustainable campus project but also how it can be extended to life education and the curriculum. Through curriculum design and environmental education, we can guide students to discuss and get to know their surroundings.

Ciao Sin Elementary School was founded in 1960, and it has been 55 years since the school was built after the Floods of 1959. Ciao Sin Elementary School is located in urban area. With the ongoing trend of sustainability, we have been actively seeking changes from an environmental sustainability point of view to solve the problems on campus. After consulting with teachers, the Department of General Affairs, and community members, we proposed our blueprint for environmental education and sustainable campus, which is what our Sustainable Campus Project is based on, including building a friendly and accessible campus, cultivating students!| love and care for the land, raising teachers!| and students!| environmental awareness, providing students!| with hands-on experience, and attaining the goal of energy conservation and ecological sustainability.

Our Sustainable Campus Project is planned into different stages in three years. The first year!|s projects include indoor environmental improvement, energy conservation design, and installation of energy monitoring systems. The second year!|s projects are soil amelioration and rainwater recollection, and the third year!|s project is to construct permeable pavement. Combining construction and the curriculum, we enable students to learn about environmental education and sustainability by doing.

By integrating the curriculum and concepts of sustainable campus, we guide students to think about problems they encounter in their learning. After factoring in students!| health need, the learning environment, and students!|, faculty!|s, and community members!| viewpoints, we plan to introduce natural light and wind as well as install proper sun shade to effectively prevent direct sunlight. In addition, the Curriculum Development Committee devises and promotes related teaching plans so that students can gain a better understanding of the surrounding environment in class and explore the relations between human beings and Mother Nature. In so doing, we hope to realize our vision of !§green education and a sustainable Ciao Sin.!‥
