He Mu Elementary School

!

The school aims at creating a harmonious environment and sustainable happiness for students by providing an eco-friendly place where they can learn in a healthy, safe, and happy environment. In planning for a sustainable campus, the school combines the wetland ecology inside the local Bajhang River Park and cultural resources from the local community to implement sustainability practices. The school is also committed to pushing forward sustainability education so as to become an example of sustainability.

To implement sustainability education, we recruited architect Zheng-Ze Wu (吳政澤), who holds a PhD degree from the College of Architecture and Urban Planning in Tongi University and a master!|s degree from Department of Architecture in National Cheng Kung University, to help plan on a sustainable campus. So far, the school has installed a rainwater collection system and affinity fences as well as other sustainable facilities on the campus. In the future, we will continue to combine the concept and architecture techniques of sustainability to enhance the school!|s disaster preparedness and adaptability. In addition, we will work with the local community to enhance community-based conservation, ecological knowledge, disaster prevention capability, energy partnerships, and information dissemination.

Combined with the wetland ecology inside the Bajhang River Park and cultural resources from the local community, our school offers courses under four themes: sustainable campus, community-based learning, wetland exploration, and water education by weaving disparate disciplines together for students to construct knowledge around sustainable development. In response to climate change, we will also introduce courses on mitigation and adaptation year after year. Students will be taking courses not only in classrooms but also on the campus, in the local community, and the neighborhood. Through experiencing and exploring the local environment, students will become more environmentally aware. By showing them the relationship between human beings and Mother Nature, we hope to help them understand the importance of sustainable development.

The theme of the project this year is harmonious environment and sustainable happiness. In the criteria of disaster prevention and mitigation and emergency evacuation, we will retrofit campus facilities to reduce the possibilities of flood damage on the sports field. In terms of carbon reduction, energy saving, and the reuse of resources, we will repair the rainwater collection system and improve the lighting circulation routes inside school buildings. With regards to the criteria of building a healthy learning environment, we will also renovate the bathrooms by tapping into natural wind flows to facilitate air circulation. By combining the concept of eco-friendliness, environmental protection, and health awareness, we hope to create a campus dedicated to environmental education where students can thrive as citizens with cultural and ecological literacy under a holistic education.
