Our students spend their most of their time in classrooms. While the classrooms are not directly exposed to sunlight, the in-class environment can be unbearable as indoor temperature rises at noon and in the afternoon. Another problem is too much sunlight, which often causes glare on the desks. Installing sun-shading devices, however, could lead to poor ventilation and bad indoor air quality. By implementing this project, we hope that students will have a better understanding of their classrooms and how the built environment influences temperature and light. Once students identify the reasons behind the high temperature and excessive sunlight, we will encourage them to come up with a solution and show them that environmental problems can be solved by the physical nature of things.
The school is located in Sinhua District, Tainan, an area that suffers from surges of water level in the nearby Yanshui River and waterlogging caused by torrential rains. As a result, traffic on campus is often influenced. In order to solve road traffic breakdown at the school side entrance, which is situated in a low-lying area, permeable trails with higher elevations have been set up to direct rainwater to nearby educational vegetable gardens. These educational vegetable gardens are wetlands that also conserve and regulate water during typhoons or floods.
