JhongJheng Elementary School and Cheng-Jeng Elementary School are both located near Fongshan River in Fongshan District and originally sourced students from military dependents villages in the neighborhood. The two schools have established a close connection for a long time, so it was easier for the two schools to work on a renovation project together. The theme of the schools integrated project focused on water. That is, the project proposed solutions to flood problems and methods to recycle and reuse water. In order to build a sustainable campus that saves energy and reduces carbon emission, both schools treat water issues through the recycling and reuse of water.
On the part of JhongJhengs renovation, the project included two categories:
1. Recycling and Reuse of Rainwater: Originally, the rainwater collected by the all-weather court!|s arch-shaped roof would result in puddles on the court. The project extended the rain-harvesting pipeline along the ditches into the water storage containers on the air-raid shelter. In addition to the water storage containers, water towers have also been set up to increase the volume of rain collected. Pumps were employed to pump the collected water from the containers to the water towers. For the sake of teaching purpose, water meters were installed for students to measure the amount of rain harvested.
2. Natural Water Purification Cycle: The ditches behind the F Building were not connected to the sewer on Shengli Road, resulting in stagnant water that breeds mosquitoes. After the project was completed, the ditches became interconnected and unclogged. The ditches can now direct wastewater to the newly-planted, low-lying lawn on the south entrance. Wastewater will then permeate underground. In addition, the RC floor near the south entrance was also renovated to allow water to permeate. Next to the low-lying sports court, grass ditches were dug, and RC ditches were paved with a filter layer made of pebbles and stones. New ditches and old ditches are interconnected to direct water to a new low dam on the north corner. Overflowing water in the dam will be directed to irrigation conduits connected to nearby paddy fields.
The focus of this integrated project is on water resources. In order to cope with natural disasters brought about by torrential downpour, the school has put forward several solutions, including adding water resources facilities. Aside from the courses and daily activities that broaden students!| knowledge of water recycling and reuse, these facilities can also help students establish the habit of saving water and cherishing water. With the concerted efforts made by the school, the faculty, and students, the school is confident that it will achieve sustainable development of water resources. Once the renovation project is completed, students and the faculty will be able to live in harmony with nature. The eco-environment will then shape a sustainable culture in the school, making the school a public space that embodies the characteristics of local communities. In turn, the school hopes to help local communities to develop eco-tourism and become the destination for tourists to experience the culture of military dependents!| villages.
