Chung Shan Elementary School (CSES)

!

The CSES campus features 88 types of woody plants, 121 types of herbaceous plants, and 50 types of aquatic plants. The number of native plants on campus comprises 13%. Ecological stewardship is not only a topic of environmental education, but also should be materialized in our everyday life; thus, CSES advocates a sustainable campus in the spirit of !§learning to live together,!‥ one of the five pillars of lifelong education promoted by UNESCO.

Through an ecofriendly campus design, teachers and students not only learn interpersonal skills, but also understand the necessity to coexist with our environment. Inadequate permeable pavement: Most of the plants at the rear of the Serenity (Jing Xin) Building are Burmese rosewood (pterocarpus indicus), and asphalt pavement is predominant, resulting in a lack of greenery and poor water permeability.

Outdoor improvement strategy: Remove 25 cm of the existing asphalt concrete at the Serenity Building and replace with 15 cm of soil (there is also other tentative construction along the south wall) to grow grass on top of the soil. Establish tree pits for additional green area on the campus, and add gravel paths and minimal pavement with slate tiles for smooth crowd flow of students. Indoor improvement strategy: Install flexible blinds in the rear hallway of the Serenity Building to prevent direct insolation. Improve the electrical circuits of the Administration Building for energy conservation.
