Da-Dong Elementary School (DDES)


The integration project was started on the basis of developing Kaohsiung. The locations of the four participating schools represent various generations in the history of Kaohsiung: Jiou-Ru Primary School in Gushan District represents the prehistoric era; Hongmaogang Elementary School in Cianjhen District represents the Spanish and Dutch era; DDES in Fengshan District represents the Qing dynasty- and Japanese-ruled eras; and Yang-Ming Elementary School in Sanmin District represents the industrial boom after World War II. Although each school has a distinct history and culture, they all face environmental problems comprising urban heat island effect, typhoon and flood disasters, a lack of water resources, and noise pollution.


In response to the aforementioned environmental problems, the schools each proposed improvement plans based on their individual geography, degree of problems experienced, and strengths and weaknesses. The improvement plans aim to alleviate environmental impacts on the schools and provide the surrounding communities with spaces for sports, leisure, and evacuation. The outline of the integration project is as follows:

(a) Water cycle: Proactively implement the countermeasures of seasonal changes to save water and seek additional water resources.

(b) Heat island effect: Alleviate heat island effect by developing the infrastructure for heat and sound insulation, improving the indoor learning environment, and technologies to conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions.

(c) Multiple disaster protection mechanisms: Install a water permeable pavement and water barriers for safe emergency shelter during floods.

(d) Design seeded teacher training programs for campus sustainability and a healthy learning environment.


1.DDES Course objectives: Through the thinking dimensions of ¡§Me and Myself,¡¨¡§Me and Others,¡¨ and ¡§Me and the Environment, ¡¨DDES aims to develop comprehensive, holistic, and practical course materials for the development of ¡§Holistic and Humanistic Students.¡¨

(a) Establish water cycle and disaster prevention systems.

(b) Establish a vivid campus environment and energy conservation design.

(c) Offer a healthy and efficient learning environment.

(d) Establish environmental and ecological sustainability on campus.


Through the integration of the Sustainable Campus Project and environmental education, the guiding principles of the school-based curriculum of DDES and the corresponding campus transformation project are as follows:

(a) Artistic waterfront and green campus

(b) Inheritance of local heritage

(c) Multidimensional discovery and learning-by-doing

(d) Innovative critical thinking and localism
