Chung-Shing Elementary School (CSES)

!

CSES advocates the development of an environmentally sustainable campus and promotes environmental education. Currently, the school has completed the construction in several campus sustainability programs, including solar panels, wind power and rainwater harvesting systems, solar-powered classrooms, tree houses, a small-animals zoo, a teaching farm, and compost areas for fallen leaves and food waste. The improvement plan for the upcoming academic year is focused on blinds installation:

    1. Installation sites: Hallways on the first and second floors in the northwestern and northeastern sides of the campus.

    2. Current status: The classrooms are affected by direct insolation. Design errors in the current external blinds on the hallways have resulted in constant wind damage and shading inefficiency.

    3. Sustainability analysis: CSES attempted to use healthy and natural materials for construction. Through action learning, the school improved the heat problems in the northwestern classrooms. During an experiment that measured the outdoor temperature, CSES encouraged students to raise questions and solutions. The school continues to formulate a sustainable learning environment with local characteristics through the dimensions of humanity, local heritage, natural resources, ecology, and health.

    4. Reinstallation of the external blinds: The shading infrastructure with strong wind resistance effectively reduced indoor temperature and improved the learning environment.

Currently, CSES continues to develop courses specifically designed for environmental sustainability by combining natural and humanist resources, such as the adjacent Takekan Constructed Wetlands, Dahan River Leek Park, and Yuemei Ecological Community. The three course themes consist of (a) campus sustainability, (b) community learning, and (c) wetlands discovery. Through a multidisciplinary teaching method, teachers integrate key concepts of environmental sustainability into their courses. Additionally, the learning activities are extended from the classroom to the campus, community, and local vicinity. Through activities that emphasize experience, discovery, and action, students interact with the environment and learn environmental perception and care. Furthermore, the students gain an understanding of harmonic interpersonal relationships and the implications of sustainability. In the future, CSES will continue to formulate a healthier sustainable campus by integrating technologies suitable for local conditions. CSES aims to become a center for community education, culture, ecology, animal and energy conservation, information, recreation, and industry.
