The short-term goal of the CTCN improvement plan is focused on the first-floor classrooms in the First Teaching Building; specifically, the construction projects include echo improvement and improving the air conditioning, lighting circuits, and ventilation of the hallways. These short-term projects serve as a reference for future budgeting, and are a sharp contrast to the unimproved classrooms. These projects also serve as pilot courses for students to experience the changes to energy conservation and indoor comfort through planning and design.
(a) Improvement of the echo problems and air conditioning:
The echo problems in the classrooms were the most urgent; in response, exposed mineral fiber ceiling boards were installed to improve noise absorption. Additionally, lowered ceilings and the inclusion of circulation fans have reduced air conditioning expenses. CTCN has addressed the current reverberation in the classrooms. The dimensions of the original CTCN classrooms were 7.86 m wide, 9.92 m long, and 3.4 m high, with an optimal reverberation time of 0.7?0.8 seconds. The reverberation value of the remodeling materials (e.g., dry wall painting, tiles, and glass windows) was approximately 0.1. According to Sabine?? theory of reverberation, and disregarding the effects of human factors and classroom furniture, mineral fiber ceiling boards with a sound absorption rate of +0.5 were adopted at CTCN. The construction reduced the reverberation time by approximately 50%, resulting in a reverberation value of approximately 0.67 seconds (although CTCN officials estimated that the actual reverberation value may be lower than 0.6 seconds when classroom furniture and human factors are accounted for). CTCN installed the exposed mineral fiber ceiling boards and cooling louvers for natural ventilation: the ceiling boards stored the heat, and the louvers guided the heat outside through the corridors. The lowered ceiling and exposed ceiling fans also increased the air conditioning efficiency.
(b) Lighting circuit improvement with LED lighting installations:
The standard classrooms featured windows for natural lighting, which reduced the use of artificial lighting around seats adjacent to these windows. Therefore, CTCN installed lighting circuits in these areas for monitoring purposes. In addition, to ensure that the natural lighting was sufficient, CTCN simulated the natural luminance under normal weather conditions. The results measured by a lux meter indicated that the tables adjacent to the windows exhibited illuminance of approximately 300 lux. Therefore, CTCN installed LED lamps with independent loops to supplement the illuminance when natural lighting is insufficient.
(c) Ventilation in the hallways:
The Teaching Building originally featured fixed windows on the north and south sides, which generated poor convection during the summers; therefore, CTCN installed noiseless fans, according to the results of the panel evaluation. After the construction, the cool inflow improved the temperature and air quality in the hallways.
