Background:
1. A school with limited land and topographical constraints
Because the campus has limited space and the ground is of two different heights, it is almost entirely paved with concrete, except for the open-celled stone-paved sports field, which is the only permeable space on the campus. In summer, solar radiation quickly heats up the concrete surface, meaning that we have to keep the electric fans on constantly to cool down the classrooms.
Again, because of the lack of space, our preschool classrooms are closely surrounded by other buildings of the school. Elementary school classrooms for various subjects are located in the basement. The poor air circulation in these classrooms hinders our students!| learning and activities. Therefore, immediate action should be taken to improve the environment.
2. Strong wind and heavy rain at the northeastern corner of the island Our school is located at the northeastern corner of the island, which is humid and suffers from heavy rain. Strong ocean winds often bring rain into the classrooms, and as a result, the classroom and office windows and doors are almost always closed, which leads to poor air circulation. In addition, the school administration building and classrooms for Grades 3 to 6 are directly in front of Mt. Hemei and the retaining wall, further blocking air circulation. We use air conditioning and electric fans to improve air quality, which consumes a large amount of power and results in expensive electricity bills. This is another area that must be improved as soon as possible.
Our school has applied for the Sustainable Campus Partial Renovation Project and expects to make the following improvements:
1. The electrical wiring of all the classrooms and offices will be improved. More efficient and energy-saving lights will be used to reduce energy consumption, save electricity costs, and reduce equipment repair and maintenance expenses.
2. Doors and windows with air louvers will be installed in the classrooms and offices to allow for air circulation when the doors and windows are closed at times of rain and strong winds. This will enhance the quality of the learning environment and reduce energy usage and carbon production.
3. The preschool!|s outdoor air conditioning unit will be moved to the exterior side of the wall in the hallway to reduce the amount of noise produced and prevent injury if the unit falls. Exhaust equipment will be installed in each classroom to further enhance air circulation.
4. For Grade 2 classrooms, electric louvre windows will be used for adjusting the amount of incoming light, decreasing the indoor temperature, and improving air circulation. By reducing solar heat in summer, we will be less dependent on air conditioning and save more energy.
5. To use more natural light from the outside, the wiring of the classroom electric lighting will be modified so that the lights are parallel to the windows. To decrease energy consumption, users can also decide the area on which lights are projected.
