County-level Wen Hua Junior High School

Our school!|s gymnasium, oriented east to west, was opened in 1987. The year-round sea!Vland breeze (i.e., east wind during the summer day (10:00!V14:00, which is the hottest period) and west-northwest wind in the summer evening) in Yilan has seriously damaged the windows and structural condition of the gymnasium. Inside the gymnasium, the lighting and air circulation are poor.

Moreover, because Yilan is frequently hit by typhoons in July and August, many parts of the gymnasium have been severely damaged. For example, the blinds are no longer securely fixed to the walls and the electric lights cannot be turned on. Futhermore, old-fashioned 3-mm glass is used in the doors and windows, rather than the current standard of tempered glass. Students could be injured if the windows break while they are playing sports.

Our gymnasium functions as a public space for the community and is the only large venue available in the Masai area. It serves as a designated evacuation center in the event of natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and typhoons. When our school is closed, community residents can use the gymnasium for sports, exercising, or performances. It can also be used for public services such as blood donation.

Because of its location by the main streets, this poorly maintained building may endanger pedestrians and affect the surrounding environment. Therefore, the most necessary action at the present time is to improve the air circulation and lighting and implement disaster prevention and preparation.
