Pei-Hu Elementary School



Wide-spread pollution and over-development has increased global warming and ice melting at both poles is pushing species to the brink of extinction. These ecological issues are getting more and more attention, and people can no longer stand aside casting a cold eye on these rising crises.  

Pei-Hu sits by a coast far from city noise. Strong wind coming from the sea rustles the leaves on the campus, and spins the giant turbines of Datan (大潭) Power Plant, both of which are special landscapes of Pei-Hu. In order to organize this sustainable campus project on “wind” and “light”, we cooperate with Fu-Lin (富林), Ben-Gang (笨港), and Ke-Jian (蚵間) elementary schools and with our neighbor Datan Power Plant. We intend to use the natural resources at hand, i.e. strong wind and sunlight, as the subject of our sustainable development.


To fulfil the power-saving & carbon-reduction policy, we designed a series of courses based on “Electricity from Wind and Light”. We also combined the wind & light powering equipment with these courses to help students understand how much we can benefit from these natural resources in our daily lives. Because these elements are so easily available around us, we hope we can use them to build up a green and eco-friendly campus for our kids. The following lists our actions in this project:

(1)   We installed powering equipment that can generate electricity from wind and solar power. We then used the electricity for our LED display and corridor lighting.

(2)   The LED display powered by wind and light was used for real time school news report and other information broadcast.

(3)   Our ceiling lights also used the electricity generated from wind and solar power and lighted up Pei-Hu’s corridors in the night.

(4)   We bought a couple of spinning bikes for students to exercise and burn their calories after class, so that they could understand the transformation of energies, from kinetic energy (riding) to heat energy (sweating).

(5)   We bought some solar-powered assembly toys to arouse kids’ interest in energy transformation. They would learn that light can also power up these toys through energy conversion without charging.
