       Because of the serious blow from “921 Earthquake”, our school began to realize the importance of sustainability for a campus. 921 pushed us to look back on our eco policies, such as energy recycling, power-saving and carbon reduction.

       Our school was granted a NTD 800,000 funding from the Ministry of Education in 2007 for a rainwater recycling system. The past three years have seen its remarkable utility in water saving.

       Our 2009 sustainable campus project was a joint program joined by Guo-Yi (果毅) and An-Nei (岸內) elementary schools. All the 1.2 million funding was spent on interior improvement for derelict spaces. Items included new roofing, efficient lighting, and better ventilation. The new refurbished places could serve as a coffee corner for students to chill out and study.

       These utility-room-turned sites have become new landmarks on the campus. We cooperated with local coffee industry and transformed the deserted places into an attractive corner with coffee aroma. After all these green efforts, Chin-Shan has become a green school with ecology and sustainability. Our students also began to be more aware of green issues.

       This August, Typhoon Morakot (莫拉克) came to remind us how little we have done to conserve our environment and to respect the nature. The devastating flooding was a hit back from nature. After all these disasters, we have come to realize sustainability is the only way to human survival.
