Zhi-Shan Junior High School
Smart Use of Solar Power !
Zhi-Shan Junior High School sits by Wai-shuan-xi (外雙溪). Our River Trekking Program has been widely accepted by our teachers, students, their family, and local communities since 2001. This program drew us closer to the stream beside our campus, and tightly united our school with other schools located along this stream, such as Shuang Xi Elementary School (雙溪國小), XiShan Elementary School (溪山國小), Pingdeng Elementary School (平等國小). Our school enjoys abundant cultural heritage from neighboring institutes, e.g.
In 2003, we proposed a project to promote “2 Intimacies --- Water Intimacy & Campus Intimacy.” This project even won the creative-greening competition organized by
For this reason, we proposed a sustainable campus project in 2005 to use the siphon principle to direct water from Wai-shuan-xi into our campus. The water’s height difference also helped us generate electricity. These green efforts have been put into our education, e.g. courses like water quality detection, and hydro power system.
Our 2008 sustainable campus project aimed to pump water from Wai-shuan-xi to the roofs of our buildings for campus irrigation and toilet use. This water recycling can be seen as an example of water saving.
This year, we planned to focus our sustainable campus project on photovoltaic (PV) solar power systems. Two kinds of PV panels were installed on our campus, one sun-tracking and the other tilt-fixed. Students were guided to see the difference between the two, and to watch their performance on a LED display panel. In doing so, students could have a better understanding of green issues like energy conversion, green energy, and power-saving & carbon reduction.
