2013 Sustainable Campus Program-health, energy conservation, waste reduction, and disaster mitigation, LOHAS Sikou Elementary School We are a model school and have formulated a 5-year plan for sustainable development. Our plan focuses on rainwater harvesting and reuse, improving indoor environment, and installing permeable pavements. This plan aims at creating an ideal learning and teaching environment for teachers and students.

Additionally, the plan also aims at renovating villages and roads in the local community. By doing so, we can build a healthy, energy-saving, and sustainable community that reduces wastes, presents local cultures, and helps to mitigate disasters. Under the guidance of Mr. Chia-Hisang Ho, our principal, in 2010, we participated in an integrating project and completed the following projects: “Installing T5 tubes in some classrooms-conserving energy”, “Installing horizontal sunshades outside the library-improving indoor environment”, and “Laying insulating bricks on the roof of the Ying-Xi Building-improving indoor environment”.

In accordance with the sustainable project, we have created an energy-conserving and healthy environment and enjoyed the preliminary benefits. Our attempt to apply for the integrating project failed in 2011 and 2012. However, our request for subsidies on individual projects was granted in 2013.

Our subsidies will be used for the following projects:

    1. “Installing rainwater piggy banks in the Yi-Ran Building-harvesting rainwater”: using rooftops to harvest rainwater for irrigation and flushing to reduce the amount of tap water and underground water used.

    2. “Rendering the roof of the library water-proof and heat-insulating-improving indoor environment”: decreasing the indoor temperature, increasing ventilation in the 2nd floor, and harvesting rainwater.

    3. “Installing horizontal sunshades outside a corridor-improving indoor environment”: reducing sun exposure penetrating from the east and causing eye irritation during spring, fall, and winter.

    4. “Installing T5 tubes in the 1st and 2nd floors of the administrative building-conserving energy and managing energy use”: offices, including the principal’s office, use lights throughout the year. In addition, the lighting in the 2nd floor is not sufficient. Therefore, it is more energy-efficient to replace old light tubes with energy-conserving tubes.

We renovated the campus in 2010 and 2013 and improved the overall environment. The projects help teachers and students to experience the practice of sustainability; therefore, the projects bear educational significance. In 2014, we will continue to improve the environment and work to become a model school of the sustainable program. Furthermore, in response to challenges caused by climate change, we will incorporate the concept of disaster prevention and mitigation and promote the essence of creating a sustainable environment in the local community. We will recognize and incorporate the cultures of the local agricultural villages into our future construction plans.
